Things You Need to Know Before Traveling to Zanzibar

  • Visa & Entry: Most travelers require a Tanzanian visa. You can apply online before arrival or get one at the airport. The process is straightforward, but queues can be long during peak season. As of 2026, inbound travel insurance (~$44) is mandatory, covering medical emergencies and trip interruptions.
  • Health Requirements: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you’re arriving from endemic countries. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended, and mosquito repellent is essential. Carry sunscreen and hydration salts — Zanzibar’s sun is intense.
  • Currency: The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. USD is widely accepted in hotels and tours, but small shops and local markets prefer shillings. ATMs are available in Stone Town, Nungwi, and Paje.
  • Dress Code: Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. In Stone Town and villages, modest clothing is expected — cover shoulders and knees. On beaches and resorts, swimwear is fine. Respecting local customs will earn you warm smiles.
  • Best Time to Visit: June–October and December–February are dry seasons with sunny skies, perfect for beach and sea excursions. The rainy seasons (March–May, November) bring lush greenery but can disrupt outdoor plans.
